Justice for Ukraine - Where are we at? - July 2024
Dear friends and colleagues,
In July, we have focused on one of the major conflicts going on in the world right now, and surely one that is producing some of the quickest and most compelling advances to the international law field. We looked at justice for war crimes in Ukraine, and in a four-part series, we asked some top Ukrainian experts where we are at and what changes they are seeing on the ground.
The recent months have proven to us that there is not a dull moment in international justice and surely July was no exception. As we wait for the pre-trial chamber of the International Criminal Court to confirm or not the arrest warrants in the Israel and Hamas case, we asked Kevin Jon Heller, professor of International Law and Security at the University of Copenhagen’s Centre for Military Studies and the ICC prosecutor’s special advisor to the prosecutor on war crimes about all the legalities around it.
And of course - despite the late Friday night and the tram situation with Molly we felt we had to do an emergency podcast about the monumental decision that the International Court of Justice took in the Palestine case. In their advisory opinion, the court ruled that all Israeli settlements are illegal, and much much more.
At the War Criminals Book Club, our monthly bonus episodes on Patreon, we read and discussed war crimes in the play Henri V by William Shakespeare with fellow journalist and special guest Dave Clark.

This July we dug into a trend we've observed in the international justice community - discussing Shakespeare and war crimes. And when Dave Clark, a fellow journalist for AFP, tweeted about Henri V, we seized the moment. Together we discuss Henry V by William Shakespeare.

Other suggestions:
- Janet highly recommends Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club four books.
- Anaïs Nin's Henry and June is Molly's suggestion this month. If you think you made bad dating decisions in the past, it'll make you reconsider that.
- A book tip from our producer Margherita, too. Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro is a beautiful and subtle book to reflect on the way we love and feel.

Looking Ahead
Summer is here and we'll take our annual break in August. But our traditional series of throw backs will be there to keep you company. Our new intern Erik has been carefully selecting four episodes from our archive that continue to be relevant for the world we live in. Check them out.
During our break, Patreon will be the place to go for our top recommendations for summer reads, listens and watches. It will also be the place where we will post a bit more about our vacation activities, so do go have a look and reach out!
In September we will be back with the book review of Alexa Hagerty's Still Life with Bones: A forensic quest for justice among Latin America’s mass graves. And many new episodes on our regular feed.
As always, thanks a lot and wish you a lovely summer!
