What is going on with Ukraine’s domestic legal system? It has to prosecute alleged thousands of war crimes. Nadia Volkova is the founder and director of the Ukrainian Legal Advisory Group (ULAG) – a Ukrainian NGO that works on Justice and Accountability in the context of armed conflict.
Nadia has been on the pod before in 2022 when the ICC prosecutor opened an investigation into Ukraine in our ways to accountability episode. And we thought we’d give her a solo gig to talk to us about ULAG’s recent needs assessment report of Ukraine’s justice system.
They say: “The occupation and the subsequent full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia has put to the test the effectiveness and efficiency of the existing architecture of justice…10 years of the ongoing armed conflict in the territory of Ukraine and 2 years of the invasion have revealed that even the most robust justice related response consisting of engagement of the existing accountability options and complementing them with specifically created and tailored mechanisms has not proven to be effective”
This is another episode in our mini-series focusing on Ukraine. We’ve looked at prosecuting CRSV, Hate Speech, and we will be covering Ukraine and Gender.
