Episode 29 – The Activist Lawyer with Nadja Houben and Victor Fokke

Victor Fokke and Nadja Houben

A while back we spoke to documentary filmmakers Victor Fokke and producer Nadja Houben, of Human Rights in the Picture, about why they’d made a film about the British activist lawyer, Sir Nigel Rodley.

We didn’t know much about him ourselves, but were swiftly educated on what enormous contribution he had made to professionalising the human rights activist field, how he’d help draft the UN Convention against Torture, been the special rapporteur on torture, advised Amnesty International, been president of the International Commission of Jurists and inspired generations of students by setting up Essex University’s Human Rights Centre. The documentary – The Long Haul – is especially designed to inspire debate in the audience about what human rights matter to them.

Recommendations were for Rutger Bregman’s book Humankind A Hopeful History. And the World Economic Forum stories on Instagram.
