We’re back and gearing up to get more long interview episodes online. In the meantime we’re introducing a new format: Justice Update. In these shorter episodes Janet and Stephanie will talk about which current developments and which cases and courts are keeping them busy.
In the first installment after our break we talk about our holiday reading, what we have been up to in the past week and which longer episodes we have in store for Asymmetrical haircuts.

The trial Stephanie attended at the Dutch terror court is covered well here.
It’s the courtroom that anyone who is charged with responsibility for the MH17 flight would be brought to. And if you want to know more about accountability efforts there, check out our interview with Marieke de Hoon . Maybe this is also a good time to give a shout out to the great Bellingcat podcast on MH17 – launched the same week as ours, but made it into the top 100 of all kinds of ‘get you podcast here’ spaces (and ours hasn’t yet). Despite that, we thoroughly recommend it – a tough but great listen.
We also talk about the pingpong being played between judges and prosecutor at the ICC over the potential case brought by the Comores concerning the Gaza blockade-running ship the Mavi Marmara which the Israeli military boarded in 2010. Janet did an interview with one of the passengers. We’ll try to look at this again come December when the prosecutor has to answer the judges’ latest request.
And books – Stephanie’s been reading Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday. Janet has stuck with the journalist covering war crimes theme – Lindsey Hilsum’s biography In Extremis; the Life of War Correspondent Marie Colvin. It’s not always flattering – but written with great compassion and understanding of what makes some people run towards a battlefront rather than away.
